Our Pioneer organization shall strive to develop in its members their potential for leadership through interaction skills with others and promote service to
the Lord and to the world around them. This will be accomplished through worship, evangelism, education, citizenship and recreational activities, all
centered in God's word and consistent with the doctrine of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod or of a Lutheran Church in doctrinal fellowship with
the WELS.

Pioneers
by Ruth Rider
My uncle, Martin Jaus, told us a lot about bow and arrows. If you have a certain kind of bow and arrow,
you have to shoot it by the tips of your fingers. He told us stories and showed us pictures about hunting
for deer. Since the arrows are so fast and the tips are so sharp, they usually go right through the deer
bones. The deer dies instantly most of the time. He also goes bowfishing using a weighted arrow with a
string and reel.
Thanks to everyone who let us borrow bows and arrows. Jim Evenson, Mike Rider, Barbara Rider,
James Miller, and Pastor Muske came to help us practice archery. The Niebuhrs reviewed thunderstorm
safety with us. It's good to have other people helping us do stuff a little. Maybe some more will help out
sometime. The younger kids did an obstacle course as fast as they could. They played some water
games too.

PIONEERS
January 31 Meeting Report by Sam and Andy Muske:
There was a devotion by Pastor Gorte. Then we all learned First Aid. We learned about burns, blisters, frostbite,
and sprains and broken bones, and how to treat them. Oh yeah, and bloody noses.
Then we made yarn dolls. First we had to get a piece of cardboard and we had to wrap the yarn around it. And
then once we had enough yarn around it, you make the head next. Then we braid the arms and legs, then you're
done.
While the other kids were making yarn dolls, we got pieces of paper with types of injuries on them and handed
them to the presenter and we had to say how to treat what was written on the paper. It was fun, but hard.
AND THEN WE GOT OUR PINE CARS!!!!

Thank you to those who have donated various supplies for the LGP District Camp. Once registration forms are
returned, we will know if there is still a need for more yet. Another item from the District is that it's hosting a
swimming party on March 7 from 1-4 pm at the Lake Crystal Recreation Center. - a great way to beat the winter
blahs! Also, the District Pinewood Derby will be held Friday, March 26, 6:00pm at St. Paul's Luth. Church in North
Mankato.
Another Pioneer caravan in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada sent us a paper Susie Sunbeam (the LGP mascot) which we
included in a group photo while caroling at the Fairfax Community Home. After we take a landmark photo (at
MLC), we'll send the pictures back with some info about our caravan. It's a good way to connect with our fellow
Lutheran Pioneers from other places. Some correspondence that we've sent recently includes Christmas cards
and valentines to our missionary families in Thailand, Alabama, Kentucky, and Arizona.
We are still in need of leaders or assistants, especially men to help with some of our eight wonderful boys. (Our
Pioneer council president and vice president, having served for 14 years, are planning to step down from these
positions yet as well.) If you are interested in volunteering, contact Pastor Gorte or Naomi Evenson. For a limited
time, both current and future leaders and assistants can view a staff development DVD which gives insight into
guiding multi-level pioneer groups like ours! It is on loan to us from the national office for a few weeks. (Contact
Naomi for a turn to view it.) We plan to borrow other training material next month. Also, the Lutheran Boy Pioneers
Biannual Convention will be held April 17, 2010 in Watertown, WI and will be streamed to all who wish to
participate. Those who attend can learn more from the workshops offered there. For more info, contact Dale
Lorfeld at lpexecdir@tds.net or call (262)534-5124.
We've been busy designing our cars and trucks for the Pinewood Derby on March 19 (note the date change)!
There are a few extra pinecars available if you'd still like to get in on the action. On March 24, we will be serving a
Lenten soup supper. Looking ahead, if you are interested in helping with a canoe outing on May 23 and/or in
providing us with some equipment, please let a Pioneer leader know in the near future.

Swim and Gym Day, by Hannah and Lisa Black
Lyle Black and his family attended the LGP District Family Event called “Swim and Gym Day”. This was
held at the Lake Crystal Recreation Center on Sunday, March 7 from 1-4pm. Here everyone had the
opportunity to swim in the indoor swimming pool. At the pool there were many plastic balls to play with,
a water slide, and a hot tub to enjoy. At 2:30 during a required swim break, the Pioneer families met
upstairs in an activity room for devotion led by Pastor Koch and snack. Lana Sander led a short
meeting to inform us all of the upcoming Pioneer events. Then we could participate in more activities.
In addition to the swimming pool, there was also a large gym open. Many played basketball, volleyball,
scooted on scooter boards, or walked upstairs on the walking track. This was a well organized, fun
family day spent with other Pioneer families.

We had a great turnout for our Pinewood Derby at Family Night on March 19. About 75 people came to see 33
vehicles with a wide range of designs race in the six divisions. An extension was added to the track to
accommodate the semi trucks which raced for the very first time. Many thanks to everyone who participated and
helped to make the event a big success! Results, pictures, and more info are posted on our website:
rivervalleydistrictlutheranpioneers.org/Caravan419
We are still in need of volunteers, especially men to assist some or all of our eight boys who range from grade 1-
8. There is a wealth of information in our train and caravan libraries for your use! We also need people to serve
on the Pioneer Council which only meets about twice each year. Those interested in volunteering in any way
should contact Naomi Evenson (507)834-6968.
Present and future volunteers can still view a DVD about guiding multi-level pioneer groups like ours! The national
office has given us an extension to borrow it for several more weeks.
Reminder: If you are interested in helping with a canoe outing on May 23 and/or in providing us with some
equipment (canoes, paddles, and/or life jackets), please let a Pioneer leader know as soon as possible. Thanks!
The Lutheran Boy Pioneers Biannual Convention will be held April 17, 2010 in Watertown, WI and will be streamed
to all who wish to participate.

District Pinecar Derby by Ruth Rider
On Friday, March 26, we went to St. Paul's Church in North Mankato and got checked in with all the people from New Ulm and Gibbon and Mankato and Nicollet. After that we had a snack and a devotion, and then we watched all the cars race and some trucks. Jesse's car won first place for design and for speed, and my shark car won second place in design! And it was fun!

We are very happy to announce that these men have agreed to join our program: Pete Kramer and Jeremy Rieke will serve as leaders, and Mark Niebuhr will replace Dean Bruns as Pioneer Council Chairman. The Pioneers all look forward to learning new skills with their help! We are still in need of replacements for Nicole Rieke as Treasurer and for the Vice Chairman position. Many thanks to Dean and Nickie for their years of faithful service!
We still urgently need to borrow some equipment for an outing at Clear Lake on May 23: canoes, paddles, a rowboat, oars, and/or life jackets. Please let a Pioneer leader know as soon as possible if you can loan us any of this. Thanks! Needed: 180 squ. feet of gold or silver wrapping paper in new condition for a craft project. Reminder to all Pioneers: Contact Naomi Evenson by May 16 to let her know whether you have or need a life jacket. The next meeting is Sunday, May 23 from 2-4 pm. Please come with your ideas for next year's meetings and activities!
